Why Co-Curricular Activities Are Essential for Academic Success at TPS

Ask most parents what they expect of their children's schools and they will cite academics first. Which is perfectly understandable. School results are important. Preparation for competitive exams is important, and an ICSE school in Kandivali is chosen partly because of what it produces at the Class X and XII stage.

But if you sit around the students that emerge from an excellent co-curricular program, you begin to see something else emerge too. The students that pursued a competitive sport, or took centre-stage, or who devoted a few years of their life to a robotics lab are the ones that have handled pressure differently. Not because they are brighter, but because they have had more experience in failing and moving on regardless. 

Thakur Public School's co-curricular programme spans sports, technology, music, dance and drama. It's not a set of after-school options. It's part of how the school runs.

The Advantages of Starting Earlier

Most schools introduce coding somewhere in the middle school years. TPS starts robotics from Std I and runs it through to Std VIII. By the time a student leaves the programme they've spent years working with AI concepts, automation, data analysis, and hands-on programming rather than encountering these things for the first time in college.

The actual value isn't in the technology itself. It's in the process. When a Std IV student programmes a robot to complete a task and it doesn't work, they have to figure out where the logic broke down. They try something else. They test again. That loop, identifying what failed and revising, is the core of any serious technical work. Getting comfortable with it at nine or ten rather than nineteen makes a difference that's hard to overstate.

That process of identifying failure and attempting revision is the bedrock of any significant work involving technology, and familiarity with it at age 9 or 10 instead of age 19 is a thing to marvel at.

What Students Learn on the Field 

Football, basketball, cricket, volleyball, handball, badminton. TPS runs all six with dedicated facilities including cricket nets. Football is king when it comes to attendance. It's the sport that gives the deepest understanding of coordinating with an entire team. What you do on the pitch affects what's available to the player next to you. The team loses together even when one player made the mistake. Coming back to training after a bad result is not optional.

The game of cricket teaches a very different lesson: persistence through a large portion of the day, constant focus which is never truly switched off between bursts of action, the discipline required for a fielding position you may go 40 minutes without the ball. Basketball teaches accuracy and the ability to read the game more quickly than pretty much any other sport. Handball and volleyball teach reflexes and awareness of the upper body that no other sport achieves to such a degree. Across all of it, what sport at school actually builds is the experience of practising something, getting better slowly, losing, and continuing. Schools that treat resilience as a value written on a wall but don't give students anything genuinely difficult to fail at are not actually building it.

The Importance of Self-Defence

TPS offers self-defence coaching through trained professionals. The physical benefits are real: coordination, spatial awareness, strength. The less obvious benefit is concentration.

Self-defence drills require a quality of attention that team sport doesn't always demand. There's no teammate to cover for a lapse in focus. The instruction has to be heard and applied immediately. For younger students especially, this kind of structured, consequence-bearing attention is one of the better things a school can offer. It carries directly into academic settings in ways that are difficult to manufacture through classroom methods alone.

Where Creativity Finds Structure

Dance at TPS runs across Western, Indian, folk, and fusion forms. The breadth is deliberate. A student who is learning Indian classical is learning a different thing from a child who is learning Western contemporary. Both will have gained some degree of mastery over movement and timing and their relationship to music, but using different constructs and frames. A student who experiences both gains an added dimension which one programme on its own cannot provide.

Music education also has a reasonably well-established connection to mathematical reasoning and language processing. The same cognitive structures are involved. This isn't a reason to choose a school for its music programme, but it's a reason to take music seriously once you're in one.

What It Adds Up To

A student who goes through several years of robotics, assembly presentations, competitive sport, self-defence training, music, dance, comes out the other end having practised a set of things that no syllabus covers.

They've all spoken publicly before, so it won't make them hesitate. They've been part of a losing team and had to show up the next week, they've built something, tested that it works, found out it doesn't, and tried something else. They've all sat in a rehearsal when they were the least skilled person there, and moved forward anyway.

These are not the kind of things that go on a report card. They do show up later, however, in the way a student tackles the first job, the difficult class, the presentation with real stakes. The transcript gets a student into the room, what happens at TPS outside of class decides what they do once they're in it.
